Abstract
The article presents information related to a research study that aims at testing a static model of local networks and informal social control as a mediator of the relationship between inmate release and neighborhood crime rates. The research also examines this process over time, using survey data of residents of Seattle neighborhoods in 1990 and the corresponding, census, crime and inmate release data from that time. The preliminary analyses of the research suggests that local networks and informal social control may work to mediate some of the direct effect of inmate returns to a community on crime.
