Abstract
The article discusses the disagreement between the American College of Physicians (ACP) and other respected organizations regarding the screening of asymptomatic average-risk adults between the ages of 45 and 49 for colorectal cancer (CRC). The ACP advises against screening in this age group, while other organizations recommend it due to the increasing incidence of CRC in those younger than 50. The authors argue that the ACP's guidance may hinder efforts to increase CRC screening and fail to acknowledge the magnitude of the public health burden of CRC in individuals aged 45 to 49. They suggest that alternative screening tests, such as fecal immunochemical testing (FIT), can promote access to screening. The authors hope that physicians will provide clear guidance to patients and emphasize the importance of screening individuals aged 45 to 49 for CRC. [Extracted from the article]
