Abstract
The article discusses the use of standardized electronic messages to enhance communication in blood transfusion and transplantation. It explains that the introduction of barcodes on blood product labels in 1976 helped to address the risk of errors in manual recording and transcription of information. However, the rapid growth of automation and divergence between countries led to the development of a new international approach, known as the ISBT 128 Specification. This specification is now widely used and has been expanded to include all medical products of human origin. The article also discusses the alignment of the ISBT 128 and HL7 FHIR standards to support effective electronic communication of medical product information. [Extracted from the article]
