Abstract
The article discusses the potential threats posed by chatbots and artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of elections and democratic processes. It highlights how government-backed hackers affiliated with Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea are using AI chatbots for activities such as hacking, disinformation, and leaking sensitive information. While Microsoft and OpenAI have identified and addressed some misuse of their AI systems, the rise of open-source AI models that can be run offline poses challenges in detecting and preventing threats. The article emphasizes the need to mitigate the impact of AI on elections, particularly in relation to text-based tasks like fake emails and social engineering scams. [Extracted from the article]
