Abstract
This article introduces a special issue of the Hydrogeology Journal that focuses on the hydrogeology of arid environments. Arid regions, which cover a significant portion of the Earth's land surface, face challenges in accessing freshwater due to limited surface-water resources. As a result, groundwater resources play a crucial role in providing freshwater in these areas. However, overexploitation of groundwater reserves in many arid countries has become a concern, impacting health, food security, and political stability. The article emphasizes the importance of sustainable groundwater management and the need for accurate data and research to make informed decisions. The special issue includes various articles that explore topics such as groundwater extraction in Jordan, hydraulic properties of volcanic rocks in Ethiopia, groundwater recharge mechanisms in Nigeria, and shared groundwater resources in the Sahel region. The research presented in this special issue contributes to a better understanding of the hydrogeology of arid environments and can inform strategies for managing groundwater resources in these regions.
