Abstract
The article discusses a study by J. Bigot and colleagues on β-D-glucan in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) as a biomarker for the diagnosis of hematogenous Candida meningoencephalitis (HCME) and mold infections of the central nervous system (CNS). Topics include potential clinical utility of β-D-glucan and other polysaccharides, factors associated with mold infections of the CNS, and difficulty of diagnosing mucormycosis, which causes devastating damage to the CNS.
