Abstract
This article is based on an Open Lecture I delivered at the University of Strathclyde on 26th October 2023. While the lecture was recorded the transcript was only of limited help in preparing this article, as written English bears little resemblance to speech written down. This is something of which the current government seems to have limited awareness if one studies their current policy for teaching reading in state primary schools in England. The lecture, and this article highlight the key findings in my own research into literacy covering a career of over fifty years but also includes insights from the many international researchers whose publications I have studied. Many of them I have been fortunate enough to meet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
