Abstract
This article discusses the use of patient-reported clinical measures to assess and monitor bipolar disorder in primary care settings. The authors conducted a large randomized controlled trial in the United States, comparing collaborative care with direct care by psychiatrists and psychologists through telemedicine. They found that both treatment arms resulted in significant improvements in mental health-related quality of life and symptoms. The authors also developed a patient-reported manic symptom measure called the Patient Mania Questionnaire-9 (PMQ-9) to be used alongside the widely used Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for monitoring bipolar disorder. Clinicians and patients rated the PMQ-9 and PHQ-9 combination as the most helpful and acceptable measure. The authors believe that consistent use of these measures can facilitate widespread monitoring of bipolar disorder treatment in various clinical settings. [Extracted from the article]
