Abstract
The International Glossina Genome Initiative (IGGI) was launched in 2004 to study the genomics of tsetse flies, which transmit sleeping sickness in sub-Saharan Africa. The initiative aimed to produce a reference genome sequence for Glossina species and understand the biology of tsetse flies to aid in vector control. It also focused on building capacity for genetics and genomics research in Africa through workshops and training programs. The consortium has provided opportunities for African researchers to gain skills in genomics and establish international collaborations. The completion of the Glossina genome project has provided valuable resources for studying tsetse flies and trypanosomiasis, and has opened doors for further research in host-parasite interactions and treatment development.
