Abstract
The Global Burden of Disease Study 2010 (GBD 2010) assesses the impact of almost 300 diseases, injuries, and risk factors, including neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), using the disability-adjusted life year (DALY) metric. DALYs are particularly useful for understanding the chronic effects of NTDs, which are primarily disabling rather than fatal. However, DALYs do not capture the full economic and social impact of NTDs. Despite challenges in assigning DALYs to NTDs, the GBD 2010 provides valuable estimates of their disease burden, highlighting their significant impact on global health. The study identifies geographical variations in the distribution of NTDs, with sub-Saharan Africa having the highest rate of DALYs from NTDs. Further research is needed to better understand the burden of NTDs. [Extracted from the article]
