Abstract
The aim of this study was to complete a comparative analysis of the quality level of the market-shaping Oriental tobaccos, common to the Haskovo tobacco area in Bulgaria. Therefore, a complex evaluation and subsequent ranking of the tobaccos from three ecotypes in the area, "Krumovgrad", "Basma" and "Katerini", was conducted, based on the chemical and technological indices determining tobacco quality – leaf chemical composition, with regard to those being characteristic of the tobacco type; smoke composition; expert and smoking assessment. The comparative analysis and the resultant discussion were carried out in two directions – the first aimed at the complex rating of the tobaccos from different sub-regions within each ecotype, and the second - at the ranking of the three ecotypes within each of the regions. The ranking of the tobaccos from "Krumovgrad" ecotype showed better complex quality levels in those produced in Kardzhali and Momchilgrad regions, followed by those from Svilengrad region. In turn, the tobaccos from the "Basma" ecotype revealed better quality characteristics in Svilengrad region, followed by Momchilgrad and Kardzhali regions. Respectively, the complex evaluation of the tobaccos from the three ecotypes in Kardzhali, Momchilgrad and Svilengrad regions showed convincingly better results for ecotypes "Basma" and "Katerini" compared with "Krumovgrad" ecotype. The outcomes of the study, being a part of a series of technological monitoring of the quality levels and market compliance of the Oriental tobaccos produced in different regions of Bulgaria, might be of practical importance for all parties involved in the tobacco sector.
