Abstract
The article discusses a study published in the issue which provides a perspective for analyzing life expectancy trends in the U.S. as a whole and its states individually. Topics include increase in life expectancy in the U.S. in the second half of the 20th century, health-related factors that explain the underperformance of U.S. life expectancy and the widening gap with other high-income countries, and wide-ranging disadvantage of the U.S. with respect to other countries according to the study.
