Abstract
The article describes the direct nitridation of aluminum foil using an external magnesium getter and the in situ synthesis of layered aluminum/aluminum nitride composites. Aluminum nitride may be used in composite structures with aluminum for application in either structural or electronic applications. The two commercial routes to aluminum nitride are by either direct nitridation of molten aluminum metal powder or carbothermal reduction of Al2O3. It is shown that lightly compacted aluminum powder can act as its own getter when sintered under flowing nitrogen at 620°C.
