Abstract
Several factors have shaped the evolution of ethnic diversity in the Romanian population in the past 100 years. Key among them were the mass emigration of certain ethnic groups, the deportations and the ethnic genocide experienced during World War II, and differences in fertility rates among various ethnic groups. In addition to these key factors, marriages between people of different ethnicities can play an important role in changing the ethnic distribution of the population over time. To understand how interethnic marriages can change the ethnic distribution of a population, it is important to examine in detail the characteristics of these marriages. The propensity to start a mixed marriage is influenced by a series of factors, including ethnic group size at the local level, gender, ethnicity, level of education, and age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
