Explores notions of asceticism in relation to contemporary welfare prescriptions and low paid work in the U.S. Analysis on how the double standard operating in ascetic demands and normative values would be deployed in terms of bio-power and disciplinary power; Criticism on Michel Foucault's notion that sovereignty, on the one hand, and disciplinary and bio-power, on the other, are distinct exercises of power; Discussion on welfare cuts in the context of the globalization of the economy as well as the alternative to welfare.
