Abstract
Reuben V. “Uncle Bud” Robinson is known as one of the greatest preachers of the early 20th Century American holiness movement and was referred to by some newspapers of his time as “the best-known man in America.” Yet, despite that status on top of a remarkable life spent overcoming nearly constant physical and psychological challenges including a stammer, illiteracy and epileptic seizures, there is little extended analysis of his preaching anywhere in the academic record. Using a method of rhetorical criticism fashioned by John Lawrence Brasher from earlier research by Bruce Rosenberg, this paper analyzes Robinson’s preaching form, style, substance and other factors to understand how he successfully won over 100,000 conversions as a preacher despite enduring such significant hardships.
