Abstract
The article discusses the history of Rievaulx and Fountains abbeys in England. Topics include a description of Rievaulx by 12th-century saint Aelred, the expansion of Rievaulx's original 1,000 acres of land with gifts from benefactors and the growth in number of its member monks and laybrothers and laymen in 1160s. Also discussed are the foundation of Cisterian abbey Fountains in 1132 and the efforts of scholars to search for the lost medieval landscape of both Rievaulx and Fountains.
