Abstract
This article studies depression in chronic low back pain patients. Self-report questionnaires of psychological disturbance often are included as routine screening devices in assessment batteries for chronic pain patients. However, their use with chronic pain patients has not been fully validated, and even well-established measures require re- evaluation when used with different populations. Sensitivity and Specificity ratios supply important information about potential screening instruments, but other useful information also can be provided. If these indices are conceptualized as conditional probability ratios, then Sensitivity would represent the probability that a patient with a diagnosis will have a specific symptom or score.
