Abstract
Cognitive impairment is well established in multiple sclerosis (MS), affecting 40%-65% of persons with MS.[1] Specific domains of information processing speed and episodic memory are most commonly affected.[2] The idea of an isolated cognitive relapse, meaning a relapse that involves, or involves predominantly, a worsening in cognitive function that recovers in similar fashion to other, physical symptom relapses, has been put forth. Overall, the presence of transient cognitive change with MS relapse is well established and has been reproduced in a number of studies.[3][4][5][6]-[7] However, the elusive isolated cognitive relapse cannot be supported with the current literature. Although multiple studies have demonstrated a change in cognition during MS relapses, we argue here that isolated cognitive relapses have not been established. [Extracted from the article]
