Abstract
The article discusses how rulers administered taxes to fund the rise of empires as indicated in archaeological records. Topics covered include how Ur III kings levied relied on the bala system as indicated in clay cuneiform tablets, how archaeological remains of grain silos offer a glimpse into how the Hittite tax system functioned and the research finding on the relationship between nengu rates and peasant tax rebellions recorded throughout the Tokugawa era.
