Abstract
The article examines the meaning of two statuettes depicting goats standing before trees made of materials including gold, lapis lazuli, and shell discovered at the Sumerian city of Ur in modern-day Iraq. Topics discussed include physical descriptions of the statuettes, University of Pennsylvania Museum archaeologist Naomi Miller's conclusion that they were used in a Mesopotamian ritual, and representations of goats in Mesopotamian art.
