Abstract
The article discusses the hardships that the 1st Battalion of the U.S. 1st Marine Division experienced for eight days on Peleliu Island in Palau in 1944 during World War II. Topics covered include the Stalemate II operation to seize control of Peleliu from the Japanese, leadership of the 1st Battalion by Major Raymond G. Davis, the number of casualties suffered by the regiment, and the presentation of the Navy Cross award to Davis for heroism.
