Abstract
We study the theory of functional approximation. The finite element method is well known from the solution of the boundary value problems of partial differential equations. If we apply piecewise polynomials, which are used as basis functions in the finite element method, to the approximation of functions, we can easily derive an approximation technique employing the least squares method. In this paper, for the cases of two- and three-dimensional input variables, we study this computational procedure, then confirm its validity by simulation. We also show how the computational procedure may be extended, by the use of array variables, to the functional approximation of multi-input functions. © 1997 Scripta Technica, Inc.
