Abstract
The article examines the social significance of African American schools to the communities in which they served. It highlights obstacles that came into existence while creating autonomous educational institutions in the U.S. at a time of critical national and state political changes that occurred from 1865 to 1873. It mentions that Black Kentuckians thought that their schools would overcome their past as slaves and build a community.
