Abstract
The article explores the history of a photograph taken by Alexander Gardner during the U.S. Civil War of a dead Confederate soldier at Devil's Den during the Battle of Gettysburg. Emphasis is given to topics such as the staging of the photo, moving of the body, and competition with photographer Matthew Brady. It is suggested that the identity of the dead soldier is John Rutherford Ash of the 2nd Georgia regiment. INSET: A MOVING CONTROVERSY.
