Abstract
· Hepatitis C infection affects 170 million persons globally, and almost 500,000 were estimated to have died from hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related liver disease in 2010. An estimated 2.2 million to 3.2 million persons in the United States are chronically infected with HCV. · Continuous inflammatory activity in the liver may lead to hepatic fibrosis, which eventually may progress to cirrhosis, putting patients at risk for hepatic decompensation and hepatocellular carcinoma. · The discovery of oral direct-acting antivirals has revolutionized treatment for chronic hepatitis C infection. · Adverse and side effects from these direct-acting antiviral medications are common, usually mild, and rarely lead to treatment discontinuation.
