Abstract
The article discusses the enduring legacy of the ancient board game mancala which has been popular in the U.S. since a commercial version was produced in the 1940s. Topics covered include the history and different versions of mancala across Africa and Asia, the massive mancala boards of decorated wood donated to the Penn Museum in Pennsylvania by Doug Polumbaum and Risa Korris, and the boards' consideration as works of sculpture. Also noted is mancala's potential use in mathematics education.
