Abstract
The article focuses on the role of apoptosis and the Fas pathway in human retinal disease by making reference to several studies on photoreceptor survival and death in animal models of retinal detachment and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Topics include effectiveness of anti-Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy in limiting worsening of central visual function due to wet AMD; and characteristics of apoptosis such as pyknotic nuclei shown by photoreceptors.
