In this article the author addresses issues raised by an online Internet blogger about an article by Peter Baker that appeared in the magazine of the Sunday edition of "The New York Times" newspaper. The article was about Rahm Emanuel, an aide to U.S. president Barack Obama. At issue is the meaning and practice, associated with journalistic ethics, of the phrase "off the record." A number of topics are addressed including the manner in which reporters grant anonymity to their subjects, the use of confidential sources, and issues of trust in journalism.
