Abstract
The article reflects on the role of the judge in academic debate. It is the role of a judge to develop standards for evaluating competing arguments when both sets of arguments may be weak. However, a judge finds it difficult at times to develop judging standards than can promote either of the twin goals of education and fairness. There are severe limitations that keep a judge from influencing the debate process even if the judge were able to develop an appropriate goal for debate. The most important limitation on the judge is the fact that the judge is just one part of the debate process.
