Abstract
Few individuals in the history of the American civil rights movement cast as long a shadow as Representative John Lewis (1940-2020). Lewis often repeated a variation of this message: "Without the brave journalists who covered our protests, the civil rights movement would have been like a bird without wings."[1] When 2020 began, very few could have predicted how important Lewis's words would once again prove. From 2012 through the end of his life, Lewis coauthored or authored several new books, including the previously mentioned trilogy of autobiographical graphic novels titled March,[42] which recount Lewis's experiences in the civil rights movement.
