Abstract
Faculty members' lectures and classes are often disrupted by student use of cell phones and other technology. Many instructors require students to put their cell phones away during class time; however, this manuscript suggests an alternative approach. Here it is recommended that instructors ask students to use their cell phones for an in-class activity where they examine their own communication with others. Students analyze their own recent text conversations with a female and with a male and discuss as a class the differences between the two text conversations, specifically highlighting differences in emoji use, punctuation, expressions of emotion, and social versus task-oriented communication. Students reflect on the implications of these communication styles and differences. This activity has a multitude of applications and can be employed in a variety of communication studies courses including, but not limited to, Interpersonal Communication, Gender Communication, and/or Mediated Communication.
