Abstract
This article continues the work begun in 1986 on the Spanish language use in a small Iowa community. In that study, some of the parameters of language use were outlined from survey data. The authors' purpose here differs from the first in that they have utilized ethnography as well as the original survey data to investigate the factors which may influence maintenance or shift of Spanish in the Mexican-American community of West Liberty, Iowa. Ethnographic observations were conducted by research assistants and the authors at the Catholic church, the local store, and the Mexican cultural center, and at cultural events. Residents were also engaged in informal conversations.
