Abstract
Approximately 1 million older Canadians receive home care (HC), with 82 percent aged 65 years and older. As this number is increasing, so will the need for HC services. We therefore need to create a workforce that is capable of caring for HC clients and explore innovative solutions to integrate practice into the curriculum of Nursing Assistants (NAs).This article presents the development of simulated HC learning for NA students. An environmental scan identified challenges and opportunities unique to the HC setting. This was followed by a needs assessment, confirming the necessity for guided learning for students. Nine scenarios were developed that targeted key areas related to HC. Students valued the realistic opportunities provided by the simulations. These scenarios emphasized direct care skills and behaviours that are critical for successful care delivery at home. This experience addressed several learning opportunities for NA students to better prepare them for HC delivery.
