Abstract
This article presents the issue of where and how to appropriately utilize the clinical nurse specialist given the multidimensionality of the role. Arguments and rationale for both line and staff position placement within the organizational structure are described based on a comprehensive review of the literature. A plan for resolving the issue is described using Kurt Lewin's topological field theory which is based on change theory. An analysis of the forces that motivate either line or staff placement are given along with an analysis of the use of topological field theory to solve the issue. Finally, problem resolution is discussed.
