Abstract
Pre-existing pulmonary hypertension and right-sided heart failure may be exacerbated after cardiopulmonary bypass. Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), through a constant intravenous infusion, may be initiated as a treatment after other conventional methods of treatment have failed. PGE1 acts as a potent vasodilator on the systemic and pulmonary vasculature. The pathophysiology of pulmonary hypertension and right-sided heart failure, pharmacokinetics of PGE1, nursing management of the child and adult, and two case reports are discussed in this article.
