Abstract
The author exhibits results concerning random walks on trees and free groups (obtained by use of generating functions) on the one hand, and conditions for transience of random walks on discrete groups on the other hand. \par \edref{Reviewer's remarks: Although not presented explicitly as such, this article is a survey consisting of portions of two papers by \n P. Gerl\en [Monatsh. Math. {\bf 84} (1977), no. 1, 29--35; MR0461671 (57 \#1656); {\it Probability measures on groups, VII} (Oberwolfach, 1983), 131--146, Lecture Notes in Math., 1064, Springer, Berlin, 1984; MR0772407 (86e:60055)] and results by \n N. Th. Varopoulos\en [see, e.g., Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble) {\bf 33} (1983), no. 2, 241--261; MR0699497 (84i:58130); {\it Conference on harmonic analysis in honor of Antoni Zygmund, Vol. I, II} (Chicago, Ill., 1981), 821--837, Wadsworth, Belmont, Calif., 1983; MR0730112 (85a:58103)]. However, only the second paper by Varopoulos appears in the author's reference list. In particular, the first third of the present article is closely parallel to parts of the second paper by \n Gerl\en.}
