The author exhibits results concerning random walks on trees and free groups (obtained by use of generating functions) on the one hand, and conditions for transience of random walks on discrete groups on the other hand. \par \edref{Reviewer's remarks: Although not presented explicitly as such, this article is a survey consisting of portions of two papers by \n P. In particular, the first third of the present article is closely parallel to parts of the second paper by \n Gerl\en.}
