Abstract
The authors establish six common fixed point theorems in symmetric spaces by considering pairs of mappings satisfying a generalized contractivity condition of integral type. The first four theorems involve pairs of pointwise $R$-weakly commuting mappings, in the sense of R. Pant\ [J. Math. Anal. Appl. {\bf 226} (1998), no.~1, 251--258; MR1646430 (99h:54063)], of which at least one pair is weakly compatible in the sense of G. F. Jungck\ and B. E. Rhoades\ [Indian J. Pure Appl. Math. {\bf 29} (1998), no.~3, 227--238; 1617919 ]. Theorems 5 and 6 involve pairs of weakly compatible mappings and the concept of pair of mappings having the property (E.A.) introduced by M. Aamri\ and D. El Moutawakil\ [J. Math. Anal. Appl. {\bf 270} (2002), no.~1, 181--188; MR1911759 (2003d:54057)]. Results of Rhoades\ [Int. J. Math. Math. Sci. {\bf 2003}, no.~63, 4007--4013; MR2030391 (2005b:54074)] and P. Vijayaraju, Rhoades\ and R. Mohanraj\ [Int. J. Math. Math. Sci. {\bf 2005}, no.~15, 2359--2364; MR2184475 (2006g:54050)] are also generalized.
