Abstract
Review of the holdings of four major Afro-American collections continues from 'Library Quarterly' 58(1). The article discusses the origins and growth of the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The Afro-American collection was established in 1867 and received a major bequest in 1873 from Lewis Tappan, a noted abolitionist. In 1914, Jesse E. Moorland donated his large private library on black history to the university. The purchase of Arthur Barnette Spingarn's private collection on black life and history in 1946 made Howard a major center for Afro-American research.
