Abstract
The authors surveyed two library listservers and research university libraries in the Southeast to find out about their experiences in building and maintaining Internet-based subject guides. Fifty-nine public, special, international, community college, and academic libraries responded to the survey. The subject guides are a logical extension of the pathfinders libraries have traditionally maintained for patron use. Survey results showed that while they are time-consuming to create and maintain, most librarians believe that Internet-based subject guides help their patrons find reputable and reliable Web sites. Responses indicated that few librarians know with any certainty whether and how their patrons actually use the guides. Finally, a majority of the librarians responding feel unsatisfied to somewhat satisfied with how they locate and identify Internet sites for subject guides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
