Abstract
A commentary on an article that appeared in the December 1995 issue of College Composition and Communication on pp. 533–548. In the article, a rhetorical approach to punctuation was presented. The writer makes the point that the article failed to discuss genre, ethos, reader interpretation, and identification. Although the writer agrees that the article is right on the mark concerning the identification of punctuation as a rhetorical tool and agrees that a rhetorical rather than a grammatical approach to punctuation makes a good deal of sense, he believes that such an approach requires a much broader understanding of the rhetorical nature of punctuation, which incorporates the issues that the article failed to explore.
