Abstract
The article discusses the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) of 1986, and its relevance for law enforcement. E-mail, instant messaging, cloud computing, the Global Positioning System, and cellular phones are some technologies that are available since the law was passed. Since March 2010, a coalition called Digital Due Process based on the ECPA is working for a clear, single standard for access to digital information in criminal investigations.
