Abstract
A study investigated whether preverbal children use infant signs as self-talk for the purpose of self-regulation. Data were based on observations from a child development center using the Baby Signs Program. Results showed that infants and toddlers use signs to ask for comfort in regulatory interactions with caregivers and use signs when alone to adjust their behavior in emotionally challenging situations. Results suggest that infant signs provide infants with the cognitive tools to actively engage in their own regulation.
