Abstract
The writer reflects on the idea of musical canons in relation to the anticanonical prejudice he acquired as a result of his peculiar educational history. Education, he claims, is not fundamentally concerned with the existence of basic libraries or minimum literacy. If one needs to have canons or listening lists, he suggests, then those canons should be abundant in number, purposefully idiosyncratic, and as far removed from the accepted wisdom of the field as possible.
