Abstract
An activity based on shrinkable thermoplastics is described. Students learn the science of shrinking when they heat a plastic ruler made from a disposable container lid. They record their rulers' dimensions, heat them in a toaster oven, and then calculate the percentage of shrinkage that occurred. The scientific explanation for the plastic's change in form is discussed, and other activities using shrinkable materials are suggested.
