Abstract
In Part I of this study (Braswell, Brooks, Decuir, Humphrey, Jacobs, & Sutton, 1983), practical and theoretical bases of the Intake Assessment were presented. The purpose of the earlier study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Attitude Survey portion of the Assessment. The survey was administered to a sample of university students representing three broad areas of study: performance, human science, and liberal arts majors. Results revealed that the Attitude Survey is internally consistent, that each scale measures a single dimension, and that two of the three scales significantly discriminated between groups of students. In the present study, the Music/Activity Therapy Intake As- sessment was administered to a sample of 93 institutionalized psychiatric patients from two institutions in the greater New Orleans area and one in Norman, Oklahoma. The data indicated that internal consistency for the attitude scales is r = .77 for Interpersonal Relationships, r = .68 for Altruism- Optimism, and r = .72 for Self-Concept. Factor analyses indicated that each scale measures a single large dimension, and that each of the three scales significantly discriminates among diagnostic groups (p < .01). For the Activity Preference Inventory section of the Assessment, discriminant function analysis indicated significant differences in subject responses according to diagnostic groupings (p < .0001).
