Abstract
Part of a special issue on educational intervention models for young children with autism. The Developmental, Individual-Difference, Relationship-Based (DIR) model, a functional developmental approach to autism spectrum disorders is described. This dynamic education intervention model for autistic children conceptualizes individual differences in children's sensory processing and modulation, their functional emotional developmental capacities, their motor planning and sequencing, and child/caregiver and family interaction patterns. The DIR approach will capture the special strengths and challenges of each child with autism and provide a more comprehensive and individualized framework for clinical work with the children and their families.
