Abstract
Findings from a U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) study that compared the performance in reading and math of fourth and eighth graders attending private and public schools are other than they seem. The NCES study's measures of student characteristics are flawed, but when the same data are used with better measures of student characteristics, three alternative models identify a private school advantage in nearly all comparisons.
