Abstract
This book examines the characteristics and educational needs of unmotivated adolescents. It suggests that many of these students suffer from low self-esteem and are learning disabled and/or have an attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity. It offers a definition of learning disabilities that emphasizes the presence of significant differences in how the student processes or manages information. Following an introduction, individual chapters have the following titles: (1) "Self Image and Motivation among Adolescents"; (2) "How Learning Disabilities and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Impact on Self Image from Birth through Adolescence"; (3) "The Emotional Cost for an Adolescent of Having a Learning Disability and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Especially When the Problem Is Undiagnosed"; (4) "Purposeful Failure or Risk Avoidance, a Reaction to Frequent, Unpredictable Failure at Any Age"; (5) "Recognizing the Risk Avoidant Adolescent"; (6) "The Relationship of Prosody and Other Nonverbal Communication Skills to Self Image and Motivation"; (7) "Management of Risk Avoidant Behavior"; (8) "Predicting the Depth of Self Image Problems in Adolescents"; and (9) "Historical View of Learning Disabilities and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Confusion over Definitions".
