Abstract
This chapter investigates access to ritual resources (maize) was linked to socioeconomic changes associated with early agriculture in the Titicaca Basin of Bolivia between 1000 BC and AD 200. Based on skeletal evidence of malnutrition and isotope analysis of dietary composition of burials from six burial groups, the chapter investigates if maize was consumed during this period and if it was accessible to all individuals. The evidence suggests communal feasts featuring ritual use of maize may have been used to prevent status aggrandizing or power hoarding for individuals.
